The art class is…

An environment that is a safe, respectful, and encouraging in order to meet every students needs. Creating this environment will allow students to grow and mature into respectable, cultured, and intellectual people. My ambitions as an art educator is to help my students meet their fullest potential by providing a classroom that encourages risk-taking, sharing ideas, and the respect of others. I am committed to creating an art class that promotes an environmentally conscious attitude. Directing students to reuse old material for new projects, reduce waste of materials being used on a project, and recycle not only in my classroom but also in their everyday life. My hope by doing this is that students will respect others, the environment, their natural curiosity, and help to create such an environment.

Teacher’s must provide access to information and show students how to use available resources to find the answers to their questions that will aid in the development of problem solving skills. As an art teacher I will provide students with hands-on activities, which reinforce lessons being discussed in homeroom as well as the art room, and an equal opportunity for students that may have difficulty in other academic subjects to thrive in the arts. The importance of self-discover will be emphasized in the classroom experience through these activities. Developing a curriculum around student interests promotes intrinsic motivation and stimulates the want to learn, creating class dialogue and asking students to create class rules can do this. When students are able to see their suggestions being taking into account in the class they become motivated to do their best in the subject and to master the necessary skills needed to accomplish their goals.

Helping students to develop a profound love and respect for themselves, others and their environment occurs in an open classroom where students can share ideas to create unique art work. When each student’s voice is equally herd the classroom evolves into an atmosphere that will encourage students to be expressive. I believe children have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and know what is expected of them. In setting fair and consistent rules and stating the importance of every activity, students are shown respect for their presence and time. For myself, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as an educator is to instill a love of visual arts in my students, as I share my own passion for art with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for students to not only receive a rounded education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. During my time in school it was difficult for me to express myself verbally but the art classes gave me the outlet I needed to express myself. I know I can be the teacher that helps my students achieve their fullest potential in all the areas of art.
